Dr. Robert and Margaret Pulliam: First Scholarship Fund

Dr. Robert and Margaret Pulliam knew the value of education firsthand. Robert was raised by a professor and earned a doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Medicine, and Margaret graduated from the University of Washington in 1938.

The couple moved to Longview in 1947 to put down roots and launch a private practice. Robert became known as a talented and compassionate physician with a gruff personality. Warmhearted and welcoming, Margaret dedicated herself to raising their five children and volunteering.

The Pulliams channeled their care for community both near and far. Margaret was a pillar of support at Kelso First Presbyterian Church and Robert served with “Project Hope” to repair facial disfigurements for people in developing countries.

Education brought them a sense of purpose and prosperity, so the Pulliams wanted to ensure others could access similar opportunities. Working with the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, they created our first endowed scholarship fund in 1991. The Pulliams later donated an apartment building to Lower Columbia College to endow another scholarship for low-income students.

More than three decades later, the Dr. Robert and Margaret Pulliam Scholarship has provided over $300,000 in awards to 200-plus high school graduates in the Longview area. With every award, Pulliam’s passion for education inspires new dreams and achievements.
